Event in Cuba: Conference for World Equilibrium
UNESCO general assistant director Pierre Sane opened last Monday the Second International Conference for World Equilibrium, with the participation of over 350 academics, politicians and scientists from 35 countries.

The opening will be also attended by Alvaro Marchesi, General Secretary of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture, and Casa de las Americas president Roberto Fernandez Retamar.

Participants in the event will analyze for three days at the capital's Conference Center the relevance of Cuban independence leader Jose Marti, on occasion of his 155th birthday anniversary.

Among attendees are Mexican essayist and head of department Pablo Gonzalez Casanova, Ecuadorian poet Jorge Enrique Adoum, Brazilian theologist Frei Betto and former French President Danielle Miterrand.

About 90 papers, 35 of them foreign, will be debated in three commissions, one dedicated to Marti's social and political dimension, another on nature and man and a third on world imbalance and its repercussion.

Today's agenda includes issuing a stamp from the series "Jose Marti: Universal Man," and the workshop America's Heroes and Thinkers, in charge of the UNESCO National Commissions in the region.

The first conference for world equilibrium took place in 2003.

According to Armando Hart, director from the Marti Program Office, the aim is to reflect on topics affecting the planet, as of Marti's ideas and other important thinkers.
