The latest show by the Lizt Alfonso Ballet, "Vida", chosen by The Globe and Mail newspaper as one of five best shows staged in Canada during in 2007, will debut on the Cuban stage at 8:30 p.m. this Saturday January 12 at the Mella Theater in Havana.
The Globe and Mail critic Paula Citron described it as an exciting story "anchored in a distinctive fusion choreography that embraces flamenco, Afro-Cuban culture, ballet, jazz, modern and Cuban-rooted social dances like the rumba and mambo," quoted Cubarte digital magazine.
The result of the creativity of director Lizt Alfonso and the Canadian choreographer Kelly Robinson, the show has an expansive format involving some 50 artists on stage, featuring renowned Cuban singer Omara Portuondo and vocalist Ele Valdes, from the group Sintesis, in the role of the grandmother.
In the list of invited guests also appear dancers Vadim Larramendi (Cuban Television Ballet) and Oddebi Garcia (National Folklore Group).
A different ending will mark the Cuban debut with the voice of talented singer X. Alfonso, who composed the closing song that Lizt re-wrote.
Vida will be staged Fridays through Sundays until February 3 at the Mella Theater. Extending the schedule to Thursdays will depend on the performances' impact on the audience, said Lizt.
