«This University is and will always be a stronghold for the Cuban Revolution and for socialism, and will continue to graduate cultured revolutionaries,» said Dr. Ruben Zardoya, the universitys president.

Zardoya referred to Fidel Castro as «that giant, our most famous graduate,» and said that the university, together with the Cuban people, will not allow the Revolution to be destroyed. «Here we worship thoughts, knowledge, ideas, and culture,» he stressed, adding «this is the university of all Cuban revolutionaries.»

Zardoya requested Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, a member of the Political Bureau of the Cuban Communist Party, receive plaques on behalf of Fidel and Raul Castro and to convey to them the acknowledgements of the professors, staff and students of the University of Havana. «First as students and later as leaders, they summarize in their performances a devotion for knowledge and ideas, and see in the University a strength indispensable to build the present and the future,» Zardoya noted.

Eleven outstanding Cuban personalities of the fields of politics, education, culture, science and sports were awarded with medal commemorating the 280th anniversary of the university.

On the occasion of its anniversary, the school also received a tribute from the Young Communist League and the Federation of University Students.

In the morning, a function was held at the site where the University of Havana had originally been established. The spot, in the heart of Old Havana, is today a university branch devoted to the study of the management and preservation of cultural and historical heritage.
