Cultural Program Takes Arts to Cuban Penitentiaries
As part of a cultural promotion project, inmates in several Cuban penitentiaries will enjoy varied cultural manifestations, January 13th-28th, which include literature, music and visual arts.

The cultural event will count on the participation of renowned troubadours Vicente Feliu and Amaury Perez, Havana historian Eusebio Leal, film maker Lester Hamlet and visual artist Ernesto Rancaño.

The cultural project will also be implemented in the provinces of Guantanamo, Granma, Holguin, Las Tunas, Camaguey, Ciego de Avila and Villa Clara, and it will also cover penitentiaries in the Isle of Youth, south of Havana, next March.

Cultural programs for penitentiaries in Cuba were first undertaken between 1990 and 1991in different centers located in the western section of the island, but they were put off due to limitations imposed by the economic slump undergone by Cuba in that decade.

The project aims at contributing to the full social integration of inmates through cultural programs.
