The Cuban Culture Minister, Abel Prieto, asserted that sports, education and culture are fundamental to the development and liberation of human beings.

The minister was speaking to press about a recently-launched program to bring art to prisons, that was the brainchild of renowned Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez.

The project was assessed by the parliamentary commission on legal and constitutional issues, as part of the year-end evalutations it is to present to the National Assembly on Friday.

The scheme is part of a series of initiatives to help prisoners reintegrate into society.

The minister said that jails are seen as human warehouses, where people are not given the chance to change and develop.

Silvio Rodriguez and a group of Cuban sports personalities proposed the project last June to bring music and sports events to prisons.
