Composer, guitarist and singer Marta Valdés has been awarded the 2007 National Music Award for lifetime achievement by the unanimous decision of the jury headed by Los Van Van director Juan Formell and which also included Harold Gramatges and Digna Guerra.

The award was presented on Thursday afternoon during a concert at the Amadeo Roldan Theater in Havana.

Valdés, born in 1934, began her career in the 1950s writing and singing boleros and quintessential songs from the filin movement, which brought her international recognition.

She has participated in music festivals in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil, and some of her compositions are part of the repertoire of artists from several countries.
