Carlos Lage tours damaged areas to check on recovery work
During his tour Lage talked with members of the engineering brigades from the Central and Eastern Armies of the Revolutionary Armed Forces who are undertaking the repair work

Carlos Lage Dávila, vice-president of the Council of State, checked on Saturday the advances on the recovery works from the damage caused by tropical storm Noel in the eastern province of Holguin last November.

Lage, who is also the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers visited the main road connecting Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, and checked the maintenance works in the area of Alto Cedro.

During his tour Lage talked with members of the engineering brigades from the Central and Eastern Armies of the Revolutionary Armed Forces who are undertaking the repair work.

Severely destroyed a month ago due to the heavy rains associated to tropical storm Noel, the 2.5-kilometer stretch needed almost 3,000 tons of filler for its foundation laying.

The engineering brigades of the Army finished the reconstruction works in the Mejias stretch of the Holguin- Moa road some days ago.

They are currently working on the bridge on the Rejondones River, in the municipality of Baguano.

Lage also visited the Nipe-Gibara Pumping Station, one of the future works of the East-West transfer with the objective of alleviating the effects of natural disasters such as the drought in the eastern region of Cuba between 2004 and 2005.

With a length of 22 kilometers of pipe, the transfer will carry water from the Nipe dam to Gibara, the main water source of the provincial capital of Holguin where 300,000 people live.

Several construction companies and the National Institute of Water Resources are taking part in the last stage, which includes several pumping tests.
