Cuba Seeks Olympic Volleyball Slot in Mexico

The Cuban womens volleyball team plays Canada on the opening day of an international tournament tournament in Monterrey, Mexico to be held December 17-23 that will allot one ticket to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The winning team will join the United States as the representatives of North and Central American and the Caribbean (NORCECA) in the summer Olympic Games. The US won its ticket by finishing third in the World Cup championship that took place last month in Japan.

Six teams face off in the NORCECA event. In group A are Cuba, Canada and Puerto Rico. In group B are the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico.

Raul Diago, president of the Cuban Volleyball Federation, said the Cuban team is carrying out its final training at the Cerro Pelado facility in Havana. He said that finishing first and obtaining a ticket to Beijing is crucial.

The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico are considered to be the toughest rivals for Cuba.
