Legendary Spanish dancer Cristina Hoyos is visiting Cuba as director of the Flamenco Ballet of Andalucía. Last Wednesday she had a moving encounter at the National Ballet School with Alicia Alonso, Cubas prima ballerina assoluta.

Hoyos company performs on December 11th, 12th, 15th and 16th at the Garcia Lorca Grand Theater of Havana.

At the Cuban Ballet School, Hoyos received the Grand Theater of Havana Award for her work, which she had been unable to accept in 2002.

While she has obtained many awards during her long career, Hoyos said receiving this one from a person like Alicia Alonso has special significance. She noted how Alonso has always worked to keep dance in the forefront.

Hoyos is remembered in Cuba for her spectacular performances along with Antonio Gades. Last Wednesday she handed Alonso the dress she wore at the gala of the 1992 Seville World Expo as a donation to the Havana National Dance Museum.
