Flags handed over to Cuban Teams

The Cuban teams of baseball and female volleyball to take part in the World Cups in Chinese Taipei and Japan, respectively, were handed over national flags at the Havana Sports City Monday.

Cuban baseball team right-handed pitcher Pedro Luis Lazo received the national flag from the hands of Christian Jimenez and Jose Ramon Fernandez, presidents of the Cuban Sports Institute (INDER) and the Cuban Olympic Committee, respectively.

Lazo was accompanied at the ceremony by Cuban shortstop Eduardo Paret, captain of the Cuban baseball team, and female volleyball player Nancy Carrillo, one of the Cuban female volleyball stars.

The Cuban baseball team will go to Chinese Taipei Tuesday, to compete at the World Cup from November 6 to 18, and will have its debut against Australia on November 7.

The Cuban female volleyball team will go to Japan the same day, to play 11 matches in four rounds to qualify and win a ticket for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, to which only the winners will accede.

The debut of the Cuban female volleyball team will be against Kenya on November 2.
