Inaugurating the celebrations of World Food Day, which will extend until October 16, the date that marks the anniversary and also 62 years since the founding of the FAO, Porto added that other nations that lead in the fight against hunger and malnutrition at a regional level are Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Uruguay.
With the motto of 'The Right to Food', the FAO is seeking "to sensitize society on the importance of agriculture and food," in a planet where 60 percent of the 10.9 million children under five years of age who pass away annually in the underdeveloped countries, die from malnutrition.
Myrta Kaulard, representative in Cuba of the World Food Program (WFP), said the role of organizations like the FAO, WFP and UNICEF is to support the governments in the designing of public policies that contribute to the eradication of the child malnutrition and hunger in general, as a mechanism to eliminate poverty.
