Cuban Ping Pong player 31st in world ranking

Cuban table tennis player Andy Pereira continues on top of the world rankings, after the International Federation (ITTF) placed him at 31st in the Junior Circuit.

Pereira is the only Cuban athlete benefited with a development scholarship sponsored by the ITTF. His stability has also made him a reference in Latin American in the Junior Circuit world list, currently headed by Japanese Jun Mizutani.

The Cuban lefthander has achieved many merits this year. In addition to have been part of the team representing Cuba at Rio de Janeiro 2007 Pan Am Games, his performance in the World Circuit for young athletes has been outstanding. He won a title in the Ecuadorian city of Cuenca, and a bronze medal in Sweden and El Salvador.

These results opened him a space in the group of twelve contenders for the title in the final competition of this Circuit, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from October 23 to 28.

There, Pereira will compete against prominent rackets of the junior category such as English Paul Drinkhall, leader of the Circuit and only player that has been able to break the Asian athletes total control of the first ten positions of the world ranking this year.

Among competitors at the up-coming tournament, only Drinkhall (9th place), Russian Mikhail Paykov (16th), Korean Hyoun Deo Seo (18th) and Japanese Kentaro Muchi (25th) are ahead of the Cuban player in the world list.

Nowadays, Pereira is training in a ITTF center located in the Swedish city of Koping. He hopes to break into the top 30.
