Cubas workers promote savings and participation
Carlos Lage Davila, secretary of the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers, affirmed over the weekend that without the active participation of the workers an efficient socialist economy is not possible.

Lage took part in the 80th Plenary Meeting of the National Council of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC), whose members analyzed the implementation of agreements reached at their 19th Congress held last year. Also discussed were topics such as the national economic plan, the replacement of imported goods, and energy saving.

Lage said in his speech that savings is today Cubas biggest available resource. He made an appeal to continue combating waste and misuse of fuels, excessive electricity consumption and the lack of organizational controls at workplaces.

Lage noted that as a consequence of the increased price of oil and other important products on the world market, timing is essential, because the timely presence of a certain item in the country can make possible the completion of a construction project, program or investment in progress.

However, he warned that anything that doesnt have sufficient quality should not be produced. He said the same holds true for any product or service that can not be maintained.

Lage noted that both labor leaders and administration, at all levels, must be well informed in order to demand that things be done properly. He said the workers should take a more active role in the confrontations with social indiscipline, illegal actions and crime.

Salvador Valdes, secretary general of the CTC, commented that studying the speech by First Vice-president Raul Castro on July 26 at workplaces has given workers an opportunity to voice their criteria on a wide variety of topics.
