Cuban Dayron Robles defeats Chinas Liu Xiang in Grand Prix in Shanghai

Cuban Dayron Robles won the 110 meters hurdles in the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix on Friday setting a new record for the competition with a 13:01 time. With this victory Robles, who turns 21 on November 19, kept his steady pace in the season, with his only setback coming on August 31 when he finished forth and had to leave without a medal in the finals of the World Championship, in Osaka, Japan.

However, he came back in style was in the finals of the World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany, where he set a national record with a time of 12:93 seconds. Robles became the first Cuban ever to record a time under 13 seconds. Throughout the Track and Field season he participated in 17 finals and won 13.

The win in Shanghai was on a track not considered among the fastest. Robles overcame a bad start and came from behind to beat US runner Anwar Moore (13:20) and the local idol Liu Xiang (13:21), the reigning Olympic champ and world record holder with 12:88 seconds.

Tyson Gay returns but loses

Tyson Gay, the world champion in the 100 meter dash, suffered his first defeat of the season in his last race of the year Friday in Shanghai. Gay (10:02 seconds) was surprisingly beaten by his compatriot Wallace Spearmon, third in the World Championship, who ran the sprint in 9:96. Jamaican Michael Prater finished third with a time of 10:07.

Meanwhile, Jamaican Asafa Powell, the world record holder at 100 meters, chose to compete in Shanghai in the 200 meter dash winning with a time of 20:00 seconds, a record for the competition.
