The 47th contingent of the 'Jose Marti' European Brigade ratify solidarity with Cuba
Members of the 47th contingent of the 'Jose Marti' European Brigade in Solidarity with Cuba representing 17 countries ratified their support of the Cuban Revolution during a ceremony held in Havana to pay tribute to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti.

Zeta Katamperi, a member of the executive council of the Cuba-Greece Solidarity and Friendship Association, spoke to ACN and highlighted the international significance of socialism on the Caribbean island as a guide for other peoples.

Katamperi explained that their presence in Cuba also aims at expressing their rejection of the financial, commercial and economic blockade imposed on the island by many US administrations for almost 50 years and which has cost the Cuban people more than 82 billion dollars and has been repeatedly condemned by the UN General Assembly.

For his part, Domenico Toscano, of the Cuba-Italy riendship Association in Fosacesia, demanded the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who have been unjustly imprisoned in the United States for almost nine years.

Toscano noted that Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five, were detained in 1998 for having infiltrating right-wing anti-Cuba organization based in Florida, which have organized numerous terrorist actions against the island over the last 45 years causing death and huge material damage.

Meanwhile, Dean Weston, a British member of the group and coordinator of the Executive Board of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in London, announced that, on October 8th, they would participate in a vigil in front of the US embassy in the British capital to express their support of Cuba.

During their stay in Cuba that will conclude on September 22nd, the visitors will carry out voluntary work in farms and will exchange experiences with Cuban youth, workers and leaders of political and grass-root organizations. They will also visit places of cultural, historic and economic interest.

Also on Monday, the Greek members of the European solidarity brigade sent a replica of the Parthenon to Cuban President Fidel Castro as an expression of their admiration for the Cuban people and the leadership of Fidel Castro.

The Parthenon (in Greek it means virgin - one of the adjectives that described Athens' patron goddess Athena) was built on the Acropolis in 447-432 B.C. by Pericles to honor Athena and to commemorate the Greek victory over the Persians. The monument is considered one of the most important ones of the old Greek civilization and is also regarded as one of the most beautiful architectural works of all times.
