Cuba prepares for end of summer festivities

A huge book fair on Friday, August 24 at Havanas historic Prado promenade will inaugurate activities to be held through to September 2 to officially bring the summer season to a close in Cuba.

Festivities are being organized by the Young Communist League of Cuba (UJC). UJC representative Reinaldo Lopez Hernandez told the press in Havana that among the options for the coming days are a childrens kite festival at La Punta (the colonial fortress at the entrance of the Havana Bay), an open air performance at the Capitol building by actors from the popular childrens TV show The Yellow Umbrella, a food fair with the participation of several of the citys restaurants, and a chess event featuring several Cuban grandmasters.

On Saturday, August 25, renowned salsa band Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco will offer an outdoors concert at the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Square, across from the US Interest Section in Havana, while Adalberto Álvarez y su Son will place the same venue on August 31. Other top Cuban bands are scheduled to play concerts across the city and country.

Children activities will be taking place in all Cuban provinces beginning August 26. The children theater group La Colmenita (Little beehive) will be making special presentations of Cinderella According to The Beatles from August 30 to September 2 at Havanas Karl Marx Theater.

Saturday, September 1 will feature The Feast of Sound with some 30 local DJs spinning tunes at four different open-air locations in the city.

Earlier that day, schools across Cuba will take part in a session of voluntary work aimed at cleaning and decorating classrooms and schools in preparation for the new school year that begins the following week.
