Cuban Baseball Team to play in Italy

The Cuban team is managed by Lourdes Gourriel who guides Sancti Spiritus in the Cuban Baseball League. The roster is as follows:

Catchers: Rolando Meriño, Danger Guerrero y Alden Mesa; Infielders: Pedro Poll, Danel Castro, Yoilan Cerce, Onel Olivera, Yadiel Mujica y Yunior Paumier; Outfielders: Juan Carlos Linares, Isaac Martinez, Jorge Padrón, Ronnier Mustelier y Yunieski Gourriel: Right-handed Pitchers: Osmel Cintra, Angel Peña, Felix Rivera, Jose Angel García, Juan Yasser Serrano, Ubisney Bermúdez, Yoelkis Cruz and Left-handed Pitchers: Albert Carrion, Maicel Diaz y Robelio Carrillo.

Gourriels staff includes Carlos Cepero, Francisco Escaurido and Dessy Loma the pitching coach.

The tournament includes a double round robin and besides the Italians and Cuba includes teams from Chinese Taipei and the United States (Miami Team). They will play in the cities of Codogno, Parma, Godo, Verona, Bologna and Castenaso.

Meanwhile, the European Championship begins on September 7 in Barcelona, Spain and Holland is the big favorite to win the Beijing ticket.

The teams that obtain second and third place in Barcelona earn another chance at the Pre-Olympic tournament to include Canada and Mexico (third and fourth in Havana), the second and third places of the Asian qualifying tournament set for Taipei in November, as well as the champs from Oceania and Africa, most likely Australia and South Africa. To date the only baseball teams already qualifying for the 2008 Olympics are the host Chinese team, Cuba and the United States.
