Panamanian officials involved in release of terrorist Posada Carriles to be tried
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the indictment was announced on Wednesday by Marlene Morais, head of the 12th Penal Circuit of Panama, after a preliminary hearing on Tuesday against the three defendants who are charged with abuse of authority.

The defendants are Arnulfo Escalona, former Minister of Government and Justice; Carlos Bares, former director of the National Police; and Javier Tapia, former deputy director of Migration.

Posada Carriles, Gaspar Jiménez, Pedro Remón and Guillermo Novo were all serving sentences in Panama for planning an assassination attempt against Cuban President Fidel Castro during the 10th Iberoamerican Summit of Heads of State and Government in Panama City, when they were pardoned by the Moscoso Administration.

Mercedes de Leon, the Panamanian top anti-corruption attorney, said that Posada and his accomplices were released even before the pardon decree was published in the Official Gazette.
