Cuban Journalists Union, UPEC, awarded president Fidel Castro with an honorary "Prize for Dignity", in recognition of his exceptional merits as well as his tireless work for the press and the country.

President of the organisation, Tubal Páez, said that the Cuban leader represents a "combination of the dignity of all Cubans, of homeland and humanity."

Also awarded prizes at the ceremony held at UPEC's headquaters in Havana were journalists Nicolás de la Peña, Tomás Álvarez and Nydia Sarabia, who were praised for their extensive and committed work in the media and for Cuba.

Páez described them as soldiers in the battalion led by Fidel and Raúl Castro, adding that they deserve the recognition of their colleagues.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Alberto Alvariño, deputy chief of the Cuban Communist Party's Idealogical Central Committee, and well as Cuban journalist Ernesto Vera, honorary president of the Federation of Latin American Journalists.
