This was the second title for the island's weightlifters as Sergio Alvarez had won the 56-kilo class on Saturday setting two Pan American records and also giving Cuba its first gold medal of the regional sports meeting.

Meanwhile, the other Cuban crown on Sunday came in the sports shooting contest when Eglys Cruz not only defended her 2003 Pan American title in the women's air rifle event but also won her classification for next year's Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Cruz accumulated 496.1 points while Canadian Sharon Bowes (494.4) and Mexican Rocío Moncada (493.5) placed second and third, respectively.

Also in sports shooting, Cuban Laina Pérez walked away with a silver medal in the sports pistol accumulating 770.03 points, only behind American Sandra Uptagrafft who won the event with 771.09 units. Salvadoran Luisa Maida (769.03) was third.

In the meantime, Cuba also took two bronze medals on Sunday. One was for taekwondo expert Yaimara Rosario in the women's 57-kilo division, won by Mexican Indira Salazar who beat Canadian Condie Shannon in the finale. The other Cuban bronze was for fencer Misleydis Compañy in the women's foil event, won by Venezuelan Mariana González, who beat American Hanna Thompson in the finale 13-12.

After these results, the United States tops the medal standings with 11 titles, six silver and three bronze medals while Mexico (3-1-4) and Cuba (3-1-3) place second and third, respectively.
