US Blockade of Cuba condemned by Pacific Islands
Representatives of the Pacific island states accredited at the United Nations ratified their support for Cuba and condemned the US economic, commercial and financial blockade of the Caribbean nation on Tuesday.

The diplomats from the Republic of Nauru, Salomon Islands, the Kingdom of Tonga, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Independent State of Samoa met here with Cuban First Deputy Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

Nauru's representative, Marlene Inemwin, said they were pleased to support Cuba due to their similar criteria on major political, economic and social issues, particularly on sovereignty and mutual respect.

She thanked Cuban authorities at the UN for their positive relations and concern about the problems of the Pacific region since Cuba took over the presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Rodriguez recalled that Cuba and the Pacific islands have common economic and environmental problems, in addition to taking similar stances at international agencies, at which they share respect for international law.

Cuba has diplomatic relations with eight of the 12 Pacific islands that are UN members.
