This Tuesday, Freedom House hosted Cuban artist, activist, and former political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara at their headquarters, in what was described as an inspiring and deeply meaningful meeting.
The international non-governmental organization, which focuses on advocating for democracy, political freedom, and human rights, took the opportunity to renew its call for the release of the more than 1,300 political prisoners currently held in Cuba.
"The Cuban regime imprisoned Luis Manuel for five years due to his art, activism, and defense of freedom of expression," the organization stated on their X account, sharing photographs of the meeting with Otero Alcántara alongside members of the Freedom House team.
The visit comes less than two months after the artist arrived in Miami on July 18, following his sentence at the maximum-security prison in Guanajay, Artemisa. He was released by the regime under the condition of permanently leaving Cuba, a situation he described as forced exile: "I was expelled from Cuba," he declared upon his arrival.
Otero Alcántara, a key figure in the San Isidro Movement, was arrested on July 11, 2021, the first day of the historic 11J protests, while he attempted to join the anti-government demonstrations.
Freedom House's Continued Advocacy
In June 2022, he was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of "insulting national symbols," "contempt," and "public disorder." Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience and questioned the judicial process.
Throughout his incarceration, Freedom House consistently advocated for his release. In 2022, while he was still imprisoned, the organization honored him with their prestigious Freedom Award alongside fellow Cuban artist Maykel Castillo Pérez, known as "Maykel Osorbo."
After completing his sentence on July 9, 2026, Otero Alcántara was held incommunicado by the State Security for several days until his individual humanitarian parole in the United States was approved, allowing him to leave the country.
Art and Activism in Exile
Since arriving in exile, the artist has actively engaged in public activities. In August, he showcased art created during his imprisonment in Miami and participated in the "Letters of Freedom and Solidarity" event organized by Amnesty International, where he received over 27,000 letters and messages collected during his incarceration. His visit to Freedom House is part of this ongoing activism.
"His freedom is something to celebrate. But our work continues on behalf of the more than 1,300 political prisoners unjustly detained in Cuba," the organization emphasized, ending their publication with the hashtag #FreeThemAll.
The numbers are not symbolic. According to data from Prisoners Defenders highlighted by Freedom House, Cuba ended July with a record of 1,327 political prisoners, including 459 with serious medical conditions, 150 women, and 41 detained as minors.
Otero Alcántara has been clear from the start that exile does not end his commitment: "I believe in democracy. The people will choose," he stated in an interview with CNN Español after arriving in Miami.
