Cuba's Savigne wins women's triple jump in Shanghai

Reigning world champion Yargelis Savigne of Cuba won the women's triple jump event the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix, the second of 14 meetings of the 2011 IAAF Diamond League on Sunday.The winner of 2009 World Championships in Berlin could well secure the gold with her third jump of 14.41 meters but Savigne went on to extend the winning margin with a 14.68m last jump to clinch the gold.China's Li Yanmei renewed her personal best to 14.35m to snatch the silver and Olga Rypakova of Kazakstan took the bronze with 14.17m. Summer seas draw migrants to Keys

The onset of summer -- with warmer and calmer seas -- appears to be fueling an increase in the flow of migrants from the Florida Keys' neighbor to the south, Cuba. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted 59 Cubans in nine different cases in Keys waters between April 28 and May 1. All migrants are given food, water and medical attention when transferred to Coast Guard cutters. Those stopped at sea are taken back to their island nation under the U.S. ‘wet foot, dry foot’ policy. So far this year, 430 have made it to U.S. shores, meaning they can stay. Read More

DPM: Bahamas and Cuba agree on maritime border

Government officials from The Bahamas and Cuba have agreed in principal regarding the maritime boundary between the two countries, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Foreign Affairs Brent Symonette. Symonette, last week, joked at a news conference at the Department of Immigration that the boundary was finally established after a long 15-year dispute. Puerto Rico, Dominica and Cuba embrace their Taino Indian heritage

Cuba does not retain the extensive Native American genetic inheritance of Puerto Rico, but contains many outstanding archaeological sites. Cuba’s Native American heritage is very much a part of being “Cuban.” Since this enlightenment, the government of Cuba has restored several Taino villages completely as “living history” museums and tourist attractions. Cuba Defeats Japan, S. Korea at Judo World Cup

The Cuban men´s judo team defeated Japan and South Korea on the first day of the World Judo Championships team competition at the Aquidaba Sports Complex in San Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The young cook of the year might be from Camaguey

Camagüey City,- For the first time a cook from Camagüey, Jorge Saavedra Nieves, who works at Dinos Pizza restaurant, was invited to participate at the Young Cook Contest, an event that started last May 12 in Havana, hosted by the National Federation of Cuban Culinary Associations. The main goal of the competition is to improve the quality of dishes and to promote the exchange of experiences among the participants. Contestants from Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey provinces took part at the regional event sponsored by Camagüey due to its good results attained by the local association in 2010.
