Silvio Rodriguez to Receive CDR’s Barrio Award

HAVANA, CUBA.-&nbsp; The Cuban song-writer and singer Silvio Rodríguez, the children’s theater group La Colmenita (The little Beehive), and the Granma Memorial were chosen by the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) to be honored with the Barrio Award, in September. As part of the celebrations for the 51st anniversary of the CDRs, the recognitions will be granted to those persons and institutions that have played a significant role in the shaping of social and family values, from communities or other interactive spaces.&nbsp; Read More

The United States Forbids Normal Communication between Cubans and Puerto Ricans

Miami Moviegoers Enjoy the Cuban Film Havanastation

Miami Moviegoers Enjoy the Cuban Film HavanastationHAVANA, CUBA.-&nbsp; The first work by Cuban filmmaker Ian Padron, Habanastation, was screened on Tuesday night in Miami. The movie won in July the Fonders Prize in the category of Best of Fest, at the Traverse City Film Festival in the US city of Michigan. Padron attended the screening of his film at the Artime Theater, with a seating capacity of 850, accompanied by actress Blanca Rosa Blanco, the actress who plays the leading role in the movie, and by scriptwriter Felipe Espinet. Vice-president vows to enhance ties with Cuba

Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, beat Iranian Elshan Moradiabadi (2,532) 1.5-0.5 as a result of a win and a draw in their two classical matches. Cuba seeks South African funding for medical projects

<p style="text-align: justify;">South Africa should join a Cuban-Norwegian medical aid project in Haiti, Cuban officials suggested during an annual bilateral meeting Aug. 30 in Havana. A Cuban expert delegation visited Norway in September 2010, to talk about joint relief work in Haiti and cooperation in natural disaster prevention and response. In October 2010, the Scandinavian country provided 5 million Norwegian kronor ($850,000) to Cuban relief efforts in Haiti. Cuba is using the Norwegian contribution — the second after a $850,000 check in January — for the purchase of drugs and medical equipment for its 930-member medical brigade in Haiti. Read More

Cuba Seeks to Revitalize World Disarmament Conference

Havana, Aug 30 (Prensa Latina) Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno has affirmed that Cuba wants to revitalize the United Nations World Disarmament Conference to prevent a climate disaster that would be caused by a nuclear conflict. One of Cuban main goals is to boost, move forward, and revive the Conference so that it plays its initial role, which dates back to its creation in 1979, Moreno holds in statements to the official Granma daily.
