Cuban-American political activist and host, Alexander Otaola, took to social media with a flurry of posts on Tuesday night as the midterm election results were being confirmed. His reactions swung between alarm over the national Democratic gains and relief over the outcomes in Florida.

The shift in congressional power, with Democrats regaining control of the federal Senate and also securing a majority in the House of Representatives, left Otaola visibly outraged. "Giving majority to America's destroyers is terrible. May God intervene!" he declared in one of his initial posts.

He further expressed his alarmist views, suggesting a cultural shift: "Start buying your turbans and Burkas. Sharia law is just two elections away!" This was in reference to the Democratic gains on a national scale.

Florida's Republican Stronghold

In contrast, Otaola celebrated the outcomes in Florida. Republican Byron Donalds triumphed in the gubernatorial race against Democrat David Jolly, securing 50% of the vote. Additionally, Republican candidates with ties to the Cuban-American community managed to hold onto their seats, albeit by slim margins.

Ashley Moody retained her senatorial seat with 50.67% of the votes; Carlos Giménez was re-elected in District 28 with 52.86%; and Mario Díaz-Balart narrowly kept his seat. María Elvira Salazar emerged victorious in District 27 by just 1,116 votes, a margin that could trigger an automatic recount, while Ileana García won re-election to the state Senate in District 36 with 50.59% of the vote.

Otaola congratulated these officials en masse: "Congratulations to our representatives: Ileana García, ME Salazar, Carlos Giménez, MD Balart, Ashley M. We were the wall of containment, they couldn't move us."

Warning for the Republican Party

In another post, the activist issued a stern warning to the local Republican party: "The local Republican party must clean house and work diligently or perish."

He also criticized newcomers from traditionally Democratic states who have settled in Florida: "Many celebrated the arrival of people from Democratic states to Florida. Today they still vote horribly. They didn't come to improve Florida, but to mess it up."

Otaola's Political Evolution

Otaola's sharp criticism of the Democratic Party contrasts with his political past. According to Florida Politics, he was registered as a Democrat from 2012 to 2020, before switching his affiliation to the Republican Party. In an interview with National Review, he admitted to voting for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Since 2020, Otaola has become an active supporter of Donald Trump and an advocate for Republican voting among the Cuban-American community in South Florida. In 2024, he attempted to enter institutional politics as a candidate for Miami-Dade mayor but finished third with 33,259 votes (11.8%), far behind Democrat Daniella Levine Cava, who was re-elected with 57.9%.

Following his defeat, he launched a campaign to oust Levine Cava through a recall vote, but the effort failed in May 2026, gathering only 25,715 signatures, well short of the required number.

Despite these setbacks, Otaola continues his political activism through social media and his program, maintaining a pro-Trump stance and openly criticizing Democrats.

The national Republican defeat was described as historic: Democrats achieved victories in Texas for the first time since 1988, in Kansas since 1932, and in South Carolina since 1998, which heightens the contrast with Florida, portrayed by Otaola as the sole bulwark against the blue wave.

"Florida remains Red and our candidates continue in their positions. We were the Wall of containment!" summarized the host, who presides over the Cuban Anti-Communist Foundation and has been one of the most active promoters of the Republican vote among the Cuban community in South Florida.
