On Wednesday, Cuban-American Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart was awarded the Champion of Freedom Democracy Award 2026 by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) at a ceremony held at Miami's iconic Freedom Tower.

The Republican lawmaker expressed his gratitude on social media platform X, emphasizing the significance of receiving such a prestigious honor at a site that has sheltered countless families escaping communist tyranny.

"Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have endeavored to ensure that those fighting for freedom can count on a steadfast ally in the United States. This commitment is particularly urgent now in our hemisphere, where generations of Cubans, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans have shown remarkable courage and resilience against decades of authoritarian repression," he stated.

Advocating for Continued U.S. Support

During the event, Díaz-Balart passionately argued for continued U.S. support to those battling oppressive regimes. "Freedom is fragile," he cautioned attendees, adding, "Those in this struggle need to know they are not alone."

According to a report by CubaNet, Díaz-Balart highlighted that NED programs operate in areas where the U.S. federal government cannot directly intervene, linking these efforts to both democratic principles and national security concerns.

The Symbolic Venue

Choosing the Freedom Tower as the venue was deeply symbolic; it served as a refugee center for Cuban exiles between 1962 and 1974, known as "El Refugio." Díaz-Balart, whose family fled Cuba in 1959, noted the special meaning of accepting the award there.

The event featured messages from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and former Colombian president Álvaro Uribe, who praised Díaz-Balart's efforts in Latin American affairs.

International Support and Recognition

Machado thanked Díaz-Balart for his support of Venezuelan political prisoners and referenced the contested July 28, 2024, presidential elections. "Thank you for your friendship. Above all, thank you for being a true friend of Venezuela," she expressed.

Uribe recalled Díaz-Balart's entry into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002, the same year he became president of Colombia, highlighting his role in fostering bipartisan support for U.S.-Colombia relations. "A stable democracy in the region is essential," he affirmed.

The day also included a panel titled "Voices of Freedom in the Americas," featuring Cuban activist Ninoska Pérez Castellón, Venezuelan Ernesto Ackerman, Colombian Fabio Andrade, and Nicaraguan Berta Valle, moderated by former ambassador Liliana Ayalde of the NED board.

Peter Roskam, chairman of the NED board and former congressman, linked Díaz-Balart's dedication to his family's history, stating: "Mario Díaz-Balart understands from personal experience the devastation tyranny inflicts and why the hope for freedom endures."

Díaz-Balart shared the award with Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who was honored on September 10 in Mount Vernon, Virginia, during the main ceremony of the 2026 Democracy Awards.

In the same event, the NED recognized Cuban activists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Maykel Castillo Pérez, and Félix Navarro with the Democracy Award for Freedom of Expression; Castillo Pérez and Navarro were still imprisoned in Cuba at that time.
