Republican Senator Tom Cotton has called on the Trump administration to ramp up pressure on the Cuban regime and its international supporters. His demand, made public on X just three days ahead of the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021 protests, underscores his commitment to holding the regime accountable.

In his statement on social media, Cotton was unequivocal: "Communism remains a failed fantasy, with real human costs. Fortunately, the Trump administration has consistently acted to hold Cuban communist elites accountable for their corruption and repression, while continuing to support the Cuban people directly."

"The administration must keep tightening the screws on the regime and its foreign enablers. The Cuban people—whose spirit is epitomized by the July 11 movement—deserve a chance at freedom," he added.

The Arkansas senator's call comes during a politically charged week focused on Cuba. Just two days prior, Cotton had commemorated the fifth anniversary of the July 11 protests, describing them as "the cry of thousands of ordinary Cubans" who took to the streets demanding basic freedoms after decades of repression.

This message arrives amid heightened tensions. On Monday, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz presented photographs of Cuban political prisoners, including Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel "Osorbo" Castillo Pérez, at the General Assembly. He accused the state-run conglomerate GAESA of managing an $18 billion fund without benefiting the Cuban people.

On the same day, State Security removed Otero Alcántara from Guanajay prison in an operation with an unknown destination, just days before his five-year sentence was due to end.

Cotton's legislative push aligns with a sanctions policy that the Trump administration has consistently enforced since January 2026, implementing more than 240 restrictive measures against the regime.

On May 1, Trump signed Executive Order 14404, enabling secondary sanctions against entities linked to repression in Cuba. In June, Marco Rubio announced a new round of sanctions targeting five entities within the regime's economic framework, including GAESA and RAFIN S.A.

Meanwhile, the island faces an unprecedented energy crisis. Last Sunday marked the seventh complete blackout of the National Electroenergetic System in 18 months, sparking street protests in Jaimanitas and other areas. In June, 107 protests were recorded across the country, nearly doubling the previous record.

Human rights organizations report that as of May 2026, there were 1,281 political prisoners in Cuba, with 338 individuals still serving sentences directly related to the July 11, 2021 protests—the largest social uprising on the island since 1959.
