Luis Manuel Otero Vanishing: State Security Removes Him from Guanajay

Wednesday, July 8, 2026 by Ernesto Alvarez

The whereabouts of artist and political prisoner Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara have been unknown since Tuesday afternoon, when State Security agents extracted him from Guanajay's maximum-security prison. This unsettling news was confirmed by his friend and activist Yanelys Núñez during an interview with Tania Costa on CiberCuba. Núñez emphasized, "Until we receive firsthand news, we consider him missing."

The extraction took place just days before his full five-year sentence was set to end on July 9, 2026, a term imposed by the Cuban Supreme People's Court without the typical two-month-per-year reduction.

Unanswered Questions Surrounding Otero Alcántara's Disappearance

Since his removal, Otero Alcántara has been incommunicado. "He hasn't reached out to his family or friends, he's not at his family's home in El Cerro, nor in San Isidro or with any close acquaintances. This is a major concern for us," Núñez declared.

The news of his transfer surfaced through other inmates at Guanajay, as international calls from Otero Alcántara had been restricted over a month ago by the regime in retaliation for his interviews and published texts in high-profile outlets like The New York Times.

When asked who orchestrated the transfer, Núñez responded bluntly, "State Security, that's all I've been told." She dismissed the notion of this being an undercover release.

Denouncing the Regime's Actions

"It’s unacceptable for the regime to remove someone from political imprisonment, make them disappear, and claim it's a transfer to a protocol house. We cannot normalize this. Luis remains under regime control and is undoubtedly in danger," she asserted.

Núñez articulated the severity of the situation, stating, "Approaching the end of his sentence, Luis is removed, vanished, and held in an unknown location."

Regarding the artwork Otero Alcántara crafted during his incarceration, Núñez disclosed that the regime had forbidden him from removing his drawings throughout his five-year imprisonment. Only his initial Clowns series was retrieved and later exhibited in Miami. The rest of his numerous sketches, created with limited resources, were confiscated.

"Luis feared that upon his release, he wouldn't be allowed to keep his work, but reportedly, he managed to salvage some drawings," the activist noted.

Legal and International Efforts

Otero Alcántara's supporters have reached out to Cubalex for legal advice on how to proceed with his disappearance, aiming to document yet another injustice against him. Simultaneously, Núñez revealed ongoing efforts to secure a specific parole for the artist to relocate to the United States.

"It's clear there’s no future for Luis Manuel within Cuba," she explained, urging relevant authorities to expedite the process to ensure Otero Alcántara's safety.

The transfer occurred on the same day that U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Mike Waltz, highlighted Otero Alcántara's situation during a session with the Cuban delegation, pointing out his sentence was nearing completion.

Amnesty International regards Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara as a prisoner of conscience and demands his immediate release. On July 5, the Cuban Cultural Rights Observatory issued a warning regarding the deterioration of his health, escalating the urgency for his swift return home and unrestricted communication with his family.
