Luis Manuel Otero Plans to Relocate to Miami After Prison Release This Summer

Thursday, May 7, 2026 by Isabella Sanchez

In a recent phone conversation, Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora revealed that Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara intends to head straight to Miami once he is released from prison, which is expected to occur this summer.

"He confessed to me just days ago that, indeed, he plans to come to Miami as soon as he is freed. This is an unfinished chapter in his life's journey, which he views as a path of spiritual and personal growth," Fundora shared during an interview with CiberCuba.

Plans Beyond Personal Desire

Fundora, who recently premiered the biographical documentary "Estamos Conectados" about Otero's life, elaborated further on the plan, emphasizing that it extends beyond mere personal aspiration.

"It seems this is what he has discussed with the authorities, as he expressed it to me with great conviction. It is both his desire and a mutual agreement," the filmmaker stated.

Anticipated Release Timeline

Otero's release is slated for June or July 2026. "We hope he is released in June. We're all waiting for this summer, June or July. He should be out already, based on what we've been told, because he was supposed to have some time deducted that hasn't been honored," Fundora noted.

On April 7, the Supreme People's Court of Cuba upheld Otero's sentence, affirming it will end on July 9, 2026, and dismissed Cubalex's claims regarding sentence reductions for pre-trial detention and good behavior that could have resulted in an earlier release.

Reasons for Leaving Cuba

Fundora explained the rationale behind Otero's decision: remaining in Cuba after his release would result in complete isolation. "He knows that once out of prison, if he stays in Cuba, he will find himself nearly alone. Most of his movement's members are either abroad or incarcerated," the director warned.

He referenced the case of José Daniel Ferrer as a direct cautionary example: "He will be harassed, monitored, restricted, just like Ferrer, who was released and then re-arrested." Ferrer, leader of UNPACU, was freed in January 2025, re-incarcerated in April, and ultimately exiled to Miami in October 2025 under U.S. pressure.

Communication and Influence Concerns

Otero is also aware that the regime would restrict all digital communications if he remains on the Island. "His message can reach beyond the digital blockade he would face in Cuba, as they would block all phones, all connectivity," Fundora explained.

This stance aligns with Otero's own statements in February, where he described himself as "a kind of bargaining chip" in the tensions between Cuba and the Trump administration.

The activist has maintained phone contact with Fundora and others from the maximum-security prison in Guanajay, Artemisa, where he has been held since his arrest on July 11, 2021.

Political Transition and Future Prospects

Fundora also shared his perspective on Cuba's political transition, echoing Otero's views. "I told him, 'Luis, from this side of the water, I think like you. I see a transition that won't be what we've imagined. Not the redemptive vision of waking up to a new Cuba,'” the filmmaker recounted, describing Alcántara as an emblematic figure capable of uniting the Cuban exile community in Miami.

Recently, the artist published an opinion piece in The New York Times from prison, condemning the regime's systematic denial of prison benefits. Amnesty International has declared him a prisoner of conscience, calling for his immediate release.

"He knows he has entered a new evolutionary phase in his career as an artist, an activist, or a member of the opposition movement. He carries a greater responsibility, emerging with a renewed perspective," Fundora concluded, anticipating a new chapter for the leader of the Movimiento San Isidro once he steps out of prison.
