In a nation where scarcity has become the norm, leaving countless Cuban families with empty tables, a citizen-driven initiative steps up once more to fill the gaps that the state fails to address.

Hugo Puig González, the owner of the K5 bar in Guanabo, has confirmed that he will host a free New Year's Eve meal for the third consecutive year, aimed exclusively at the homeless and economically disadvantaged neighbors in his community.

In a Facebook post, Puig announced that on December 31st, starting at 3:00 pm, the terrace of his venue will welcome those without the guarantee of a hot meal to close out the year.

This gathering is organized in collaboration with Restaurant Casaquinta, which assists with both the meal preparation and event logistics.

Puig emphasized that the event is not an open invitation, but a gesture specifically for those facing severe material hardships or homelessness. "I wish I could invite everyone, but I can't," he stated, urging collaboration to ensure the aid reaches those who truly need it.

Such a warning is not without reason. Amidst a prolonged crisis where wages fall short, markets remain barren, and social protection systems are nearly non-existent, any act of kindness risks being overwhelmed by widespread desperation.

Puig cautioned that if individuals with no genuine need take advantage of his initiative, then those who rely on charity might miss out on their only special meal of the year and the brief companionship that the gathering offers.

"Please help me make sure these meals go to the most disadvantaged. If someone who isn't genuinely in need eats for free at my bar that day, a truly needy person, whose only joy this New Year might be that meal and shared moment, may miss out on that bit of happiness," he emphasized.

He also highlighted the gesture's purpose: to show these men and women that they are still seen, not forgotten, and deserve to close the year with dignity and humanity.

For many, sitting at a table, sharing with others, and receiving dignified treatment is a rare experience.

Beyond announcing the dinner, Puig invited those willing to help to channel donations through the "With Love Together" group, a community network that supports the homeless, the sick, and families in extreme conditions year-round.

He shared national and foreign currency card numbers, along with a contact phone number, to gather resources for expanding assistance.

This gesture underscores a recurring reality throughout the country: while the state apparatus makes empty promises, the survival of the most vulnerable often relies on the spontaneous solidarity of citizens, entrepreneurs, and independent groups.

Without the will of people like Puig and those who join his call, many Cubans would end the year without food, company, or a semblance of support.

This will mark the third time the K5 terrace becomes a New Year's refuge for those without another place to celebrate.

In 2024, over 200 people enjoyed a traditional Cuban meal, music, desserts, drinks, and even new clothes, thanks to the collective efforts of private businesses, Guanabo residents, culinary entrepreneurs, and volunteers who contributed time, goods, and services.

These events even included personal care actions like grooming and clothing changes for attendees, restoring a sense of dignity often denied to them.

The upcoming gathering aims to continue this spirit but in an even more challenging context. The prolonged recession, rising food prices, and frail public policies have pushed more into destitution, transforming community initiatives from a supplement to a lifeline.

As authorities fail to provide effective solutions for the vulnerable, the year's end once again finds relief in civil society's hands.

On a Havana bar terrace, through the efforts of entrepreneurs and locals, dozens of Cubans will have a chance to sit at a once-empty table.
