Social media platforms are abuzz with photos and posts about Cuban reggaeton artist Gilberto Martínez Suárez, popularly known as Gilbertman. Reports suggest he might have been released after serving ten years of his 17-year prison sentence. However, there is no official confirmation regarding his release or the circumstances under which the photos circulating on Facebook were taken.

Speculation Fueled by Social Media Posts

Facebook pages such as La Tijera, José Forever - El Taiger, and user Rickee Estrada have shared images of Gilbertman with his wife and children, accompanied by messages claiming his "return to freedom" after a decade behind bars. One widely shared post quotes the musician supposedly saying, "After 10 years, today I feel freedom again (...). These years were tough, filled with lessons, reflections, and faith (...) I'm back, stronger and with a clean heart," according to the José Forever - El Taiger page.

Nevertheless, CiberCuba has not verified the authenticity of this message, nor the date and location of the photos. It remains unclear if the reggaeton artist has been permanently released, is on temporary leave, or perhaps on a family visit, a rare but possible occurrence in the Cuban penitentiary system.

The Rise and Fall of a Reggaeton Star

Gilbertman's arrest in January 2015 followed a police operation at his lavish mansion in Guanabacoa, Havana. He had been flaunting a luxurious lifestyle on social media, boasting of piles of cash, expensive cars, jewelry, and parties, claiming success after returning from Miami. The Cuban court sentenced him to 17 years for a range of crimes, including forgery and tax evasion, electricity theft, kidnapping, and illegal economic activities.

His story epitomized the influence of wealth in a society riddled with inequality, yet also demonstrated the regime's limits when its control is challenged. In 2017, the Cuban government confiscated his mansion, known as "La Casa de Gilbertman," and repurposed it as a shelter for unaccompanied children.

Controversy Over Prison Conditions

In 2019, videos leaked from a Cuban prison showed Gilbertman living in unusually favorable conditions. The footage, shared by presenter Alex Otaola, featured the reggaeton star arguing with prison officials, surrounded by personal belongings. "I have no home or family in this country, you all know it," he was heard saying.

The case stirred controversy, highlighting the stark contrast between the harsh Cuban penal system and the apparent comfort of a famous inmate with financial means.

Uncertainty Over Gilbertman's Status

Despite the viral nature of the current photos, there is no evidence that Martínez has been officially released after serving ten years of his sentence. The Cuban Ministry of the Interior and the judicial system have not issued any statements. It is also unknown whether the musician remains in custody or was granted a special leave.

Gilbertman, who once crowned himself "the king of Havana," represents one of the most publicized stories of rise and fall in the Cuban reggaeton scene. From flaunting stacks of cash and bodyguards, he found himself serving a severe sentence on the Island. His story has become a symbol of ostentation and the fractures within the economic power structure under a regime where only a select few can prosper without consequence.

For now, the images circulating on social media confirm one thing: Gilbertman remains newsworthy, even a decade after his downfall.
