A tragic incident unfolded on the National Highway in Matanzas when a cyclist was hit by a car this Wednesday near Jagüey Grande. The accident took place at kilometer 142 of Cuba's main thoroughfare as the cyclist attempted to cross from Jagüey Grande to Australia, as reported by the “Con Todos La Victoria” Facebook page, which is associated with the Ministry of the Interior.

According to official accounts, the cyclist failed to heed the traffic signals in that section of the highway and was struck by a vehicle traveling from Havana toward Cienfuegos. Investigations conducted by authorities concluded that the cyclist was at fault for this unfortunate accident. “Adhering to Law 109 (Traffic Safety Code) can prevent the loss of human lives,” the publication emphasized.

Recent official statistics released by Cuban state media indicate a decline in traffic accidents from January to May this year compared to 2024. While the number of injuries decreased during this period, fatalities, particularly among pedestrians and riders of pedicabs, motorcycles, and mopeds, saw an increase.

The National Road Safety Commission reported that in the first five months of 2025, there were 3,035 traffic accidents, resulting in 2,670 injuries and 290 deaths. The primary causes of these accidents continue to be linked to human factors. Notably, 30% of the incidents occurred due to a lack of attention to vehicle control, and there was a rise in incidents involving the violation of right-of-way, especially in cases where there were casualties.
