American Ballet Theater (ABT) and stars from the New York City Ballet will perform in Cuba in the 22nd edition of the Havana International Ballet Festival which will take place from next October 28 to November 7.

The presentation of the ABT, the most important U.S. company that hasn?t performed in Cuba since 1960, has been announced as one of the moments of "special significance" within the program of the festival, according to a press note of the Cuban
National Ballet (BNC in Spanish).

The trip to Havana of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) and of a group of stars from the New York City Ballet coincides with the celebrations in December of the 90th birthday of the Cuban dancer and choreographer Alicia Alonso, president of the
festival and director of BNC.

One month ago ABT dedicated in New York a gala in tribute to Alonso's 90 years. She performed with that company between 1941 and 1948, and from there she made her debut in the role of Giselle, considered to be the summit of her performances.

The Havana Festival will also bring together stars of the London Royal Ballet, the English National Ballet, the Scala from Milan and the Ballet from the Colón Theater, among other companies.

There is expected to take place galas dedicated to the hundredth anniversaries of the Russian dancer Galina Ulanova and of the Cuban writer José Lezama Lima, as well as a tribute to the dancer and former artistic director of Bolshoi Ballet, Vladimir Vasiliev.

Among the premieres, there has been announced the work Muerte de Narciso (Death of Narcissus), with choreography by Alicia Alonso, and a classic version of El amor brujo (The love sorcerer), in charge of the Spanish bailaor Antonio Ríos El Pipa.
