Choreographer Rafael Bonachela comes to Cuba

British based choreographer Rafael Bonachela is completing a ground-breaking residency in Cuba with the world-premiere of his new work Demo-n/Crazy, a collaboration with Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, at The Gran Teatro de la Habana on Thursday 30 August.

Commissioned by a leading English dance organisation, DanceEast, in a project supported by The British Council and the Arts Council England East Artists' Workspace Residency Programme, Bonachela, artist-in-residence at the South Bank Centre London, and favourite of Kylie Minogue, has worked with Cuba's leading dance troupe Danza Contemporanea since April. The resulting Demo-n/Crazy is to premiere in Cuba and will go on to tour internationally in the new year.

Born in Barcelona, Bonachela spent 12 years performing with Rambert Dance Company. As associate choreographer for Rambert Dance Company, Bonachela achieved world-wide recognition and became renowned as choreographer of choice for Kylie Minogue. He launched the acclaimed contemporary dance company, Bonachela Dance Company, in June 2006 and became the first artist in residence at the South Bank Centre in London.

Assis Carreiro, Director of DanceEast is travelling to Havana with Rafael for the world-premiere on August 30. Ms Carreiro praised the Cuban dancers' enthusiasm and talent, saying: "We are thrilled with the inspirational response to this exchange. Rafael has found the Cuban dancers to be hugely talented and dedicated. We can't wait to share their collaboration with the world and look forward to touring internationally in the coming year"

As part of the exchange, two of Cuba's hottest dance talents spent three weeks in the UK, leading a choreographic residency for British dancers. George Cespedes and Julio Cesar, two of the stars of Danza Contemporanea led an intensive choreographic residency in Ipswich, England, entitled Artists' Insights: Inhabit, as part of Arts Council England East's Artists' Workspace Residency Programme.
