A workshop on underwater archaeology, a modality created by the North American Edward H. Thompson at the beginning of the 20th Century, will be held in the Cuban Capital during the Ibero-American Encounter of Museums and Historical Centers.

Alessandro López Pérez, a Specialist at Havanas Historians Office, will give a detailed explanation on the Cuban experience in this field during this event that will be developed between May 22nd and 25th, in Havana city. Jewels, astrolabes, currencies, bars and disks made of beautiful metals, integrate the collection of pieces that has been rescued on the Cuban coasts for more than 20 years by CARISUB, a company devoted to the search of underwater pieces considered cultural heritage.

The San Salvador de la Punta Castle, a military fort of the 16th Century located in the Bay of Havana, had been the venue of this event until 2005, when the havocs provoked by hurricane Wilma forced us to look for another place. Margarita Suárez, Director of the museums, Havana Historian Office, confirmed that the works will soon be moved to the Real de la Fuerza Castle, located at Havanas Historical Site.

The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO),and other international organizations promote the search and preservation of the species that make up the sea heritage.
