"In spite of a restrictive policy that looks after the coherent use of the national resources, the plan on cultural events in Cuba tend to increase, responding to the demands of new development levels within the artistic field", explained Ana Mayda Álvarez, an official within the Cuban Ministry of Culture.

She mentioned the National Exhibition of Young Producers within the audiovisual, whose 6th edition, took place from Frebruary 20th to 25th.

This program includes the cultural traditions of different provinces as the Jornada Cucalambeana and the Encuentro Iberoamericano de la Decima -Ibero-American Festival of the Tenth-, which will be held on June 25th, in Las Tunas.

Other cultural events are: El Festival del Caribe, Fiesta del Fuego, at the beginning of July, in Santiago de Cuba, and La Fiesta de la Cubania, in Bayamo, where was written and tuned, for the first time, the National Anthem, in October, 1868.

Another important event is the Festival Internacional de Coros -the International Choir Festival-, also in Santiago de Cuba, from November 20th-25th, and the Encuentro de Agrupaciones Soneras -the Festival of the Son-, in Mayarí, Holguín.

One of the main events that goes beyond the Cuban capital is the "Casa de las Americas" Award -recently finished-, the International Book Fair -with different venues along the national territory-, and the remarkable Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano -Festival of the New Latin American Cinema- that takes place at the beginning of December.

The Festival Internacional de Documentales "Santiago Alvarez in Memoriam -the International Festival on Short-films "Santiago Alvarez in Memoriam", will take place from March 7th-12th in Santiago de Cuba, followed by the Festival Internacional de la trova "Pepe Sanchez" -the International Festival of the Trova "Pepe Sánchez".

At Gibara, Holguín, will be held in April the Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre -the International Festival of Poor Cinema-, that will exhibit a good sample of artistic productions made with little economic resources, that have nothing to do with commercial commitments.

Also, in Holguin, will take place the Fiesta de la Cultura Iberoamericana -the Ibero-American Cultural Festival-, from October 24th-30th.

There are many other events previewed for this year, but between June 11th and 14th, many will be focused on the V Congreso Cultura y Desarrollo - 5th Congress on Culture and Development- that gathers outstanding world personalities in favor of the cultural diversity and the battle for a better world.

Cuba was chosen this year as venue for the "America Cantat" next March 30, that gathers different choirs from all over the world, and also for the Congreso Mundial de Diseno Icograda -the World Congress of Design "Icograda"-, that will take place in October.

The list of relevant events is very long. It also, includes the Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza -the International Festival "Jazz Plaza", the Encuentro Internacional de Academias de Ballet -the International Festival of Ballet Schools, the Feria Internacional "Cubadisco" -the International Disk Fair "Cubadisco" and the Salon Internacional de Arte Digital -the International Digital Arts Exhibition.
