A Cuban immigrant who arrived in the United States as a teenager discovered a meaningful way to give back to the nation that welcomed his family—by joining law enforcement. Denys Páez Hernández serves as a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), an agency that has recognized his dedication to road safety.
His journey was highlighted on the Florida Highway Patrol Academy's Facebook page through their Trooper Tuesday initiative, which showcases the officers within their ranks.
Born in Cuba, Páez Hernández moved to the United States during his teenage years and became a U.S. citizen in 2013.
"I wanted to become a law enforcement officer to give back to the community and the country that opened its doors to me and my family," he explained when discussing his career choice.
When his story was shared by the institution in August of this year, Páez Hernández had already served for nine years and two months, stationed in Seminole County in central Florida.
He is part of the Selective Enforcement Squad (SES), a specialized unit focused on preventing accidents through traffic monitoring, enforcing road regulations, and educating drivers.
His duties include tackling speeding, aggressive driving, and other behaviors that endanger those traveling on the roads.
Beyond Issuing Tickets
For Páez Hernández, being a trooper is about more than just pulling over vehicles or issuing fines.
"Every day is different, and you never know which family you might impact. By simply stopping a vehicle, we might save a life. That's my hope," he explained.
The officer emphasized that a conversation can be more beneficial than a ticket, especially with young drivers.
"Sometimes it's not about issuing a fine. It's about engaging with a teenage motorcyclist and helping them understand the importance of not speeding for their own safety, so they can return home to their family," he reflected.
Páez Hernández also expressed the pride he feels wearing the Florida Highway Patrol uniform, known for its iconic black and tan colors.
