An elderly Cuban woman named Zoila is enduring extreme poverty on the outskirts of Sancti Spíritus, living alone without regular meals in a home on the brink of collapse, according to a Facebook post by activist Yureibys Torresilla.

The accompanying photos reveal a frail elderly woman surrounded by decaying wooden walls, scattered clothing, and barely any lighting, painting a grim picture of her living conditions.

Additional images depict the exterior of her home, as dismal as the inside, featuring a rusted zinc sheet roof with missing sections and dangling electric wires, which the post's author describes as "four planks and a fibro roof."

Zoila, who suffers from mental health issues, cooks outdoors using firewood, with blackened pots and a blue plastic crate serving as a makeshift table.

Community Efforts to Support Zoila

"She goes days without food, relying solely on whatever neighbors can spare, as everyone is struggling," the activist wrote, having been alerted by local residents and personally visiting her home.

Torresilla, the founder of the solidarity project "Hermanos de la Calle," criticized the absence of governmental intervention despite the long-standing awareness of her plight: "Despite the neighbors’ high regard for Zoila, no relevant authorities have taken action."

On Thursday, he and a local entrepreneur delivered two meals to her, only to find she had gone wandering the streets. "Another Cuban woman roaming and no one sees a thing," the activist lamented.

Alarming Winter Forecast

He warns that the approaching winter exacerbates the urgency of her situation: "If she doesn't leave that place, she will simply freeze to death."

The neglect faced by many elderly individuals in Cuba has worsened. The erosion of purchasing power, food and medicine shortages, and the emigration of family members have left many retirees vulnerable.

The Cuban Observatory for Human Rights reported that nine out of ten seniors over 61 skip meals daily, and 44% of homeless individuals are over 70.

Minimum pensions, now increased to 4,000 Cuban pesos monthly, equate to just over four dollars in the informal exchange market, insufficient for food and medicine.

The provincial government of Sancti Spíritus announced plans to establish seven community dining facilities for vulnerable individuals, although none have commenced operations or confirmed construction.
