Cuban Comedians Bid Farewell to Beloved Humorist Orlando Manrufo with Heartfelt Tributes

Thursday, November 5, 2026 by Elizabeth Alvarado

The Cuban comedy scene suffered a profound loss on Wednesday with the passing of one of its cherished figures. Orlando Manrufo Córdova, the genius behind the memorable character "Mariconchi," passed away in Havana on November 4, 2026, as confirmed by the Centro Promotor del Humor. As of Thursday, the cause of his death had not been publicly disclosed.

The news triggered an outpouring of condolences across social media from fellow entertainers, friends, and fans. Luis Silva, famously known as Pánfilo from "Vivir del cuento," was among the first to express his sorrow: "I've just learned of the passing of the great and charming comedian, Orlando Manrufo (Mariconchi). Such sad news. My condolences to his family, especially to his eldest daughter Olivia (Indirita from Vivir del cuento) with whom I worked for several years. For years, the Teatro América was home to La Esquina de Mariconchi. Rest in peace."

Comedian Gustavito Sabadazo shared an extensive message capturing the collective grief of the comedy community: "Today, I face a challenge that we comedians find incredibly difficult: speaking with a heavy heart and finding no humor in life."

He further emphasized Manrufo's enduring legacy: "To speak of Orlando is to speak of talent, charisma, and that natural humor which cannot be taught. He was an artist who endeared himself to the people, and with his unforgettable character Mariconchi, left an indelible mark on Cuban comedy history."

Orlando Manrufo's Journey and Legacy

Carlos Otero shared a video of the two together, remembering Manrufo as "one of the most beloved figures in island comedy."

Javier Berridy Alonso, who shared photographs from 2004 with Manrufo, highlighted a quality often mentioned by colleagues: "Mariconchi (Orlando Manrufo) was one of the funniest comedians I've seen on stage, with an unmatched quick wit in improvisation."

Ernesto Flacomimico bid farewell to his "colleague of many battles," while Iván Camejo wrote that Manrufo "has surely departed to some celestial stage where audiences eagerly await his humor, as was always the case."

Antolín El Pichón contributed a video, stating: "This is how we will all remember you who worked alongside you."

From Maritime Engineer to Comedy Icon

Manrufo entered the arts later in life. Initially, he was a maritime transport operations engineer, having studied in former East Germany and Russia, and worked in the field for about 16 years before transitioning to theater. In 1988, he joined the amateur theater group Olga Alonso and made his debut in the play "Santa Camila de La Habana Vieja."

The character Mariconchi was born late in that decade during an improvisation where Manrufo donned a wig and parodied an elderly woman alongside actress Laura de la Uz. It was comedian Osvaldo Doimeadiós who encouraged him to develop that sketch into a standalone monologue. With "Aventuras y desventuras de Mariconchi," he won an award at the Aquelarre National Humor Festival in the mid-'90s, solidifying his career.

For over 25 years, Manrufo led the humor event "La Esquina de Mariconchi," held initially on Thursdays at Teatro América and later at Cine Yara in Vedado. The character—a sharp-tongued, feisty, and hypercritical older woman—satirized Havana's everyday challenges with wit and irony. In February 2026, the official newspaper Juventud Rebelde featured an interview marking Mariconchi’s 30 years on stage, a testament to Manrufo’s continued influence until shortly before his passing.

The farewell took place at the Bernardo García funeral home, located at Zanja No. 405, Centro Habana. His daughter, actress Olivia Sofía Manrufo Hernández—known for her role as "Indirita" in "Vivir del cuento"—requested from Lima, Peru, where she currently resides, that the community stand by the family during this time.

"Mariconchi does not leave us. Mariconchi remains forever in the memory of our people. Rest in peace, brother," wrote Gustavito Sabadazo in his farewell.
