This Wednesday, the Cuban comedy scene is mourning the loss of Orlando Manrufo Córdova, the beloved actor and comedian who brought to life "Mariconchi," a cherished character in the island's comedic landscape for over three decades.
The news of his passing was initially shared in a WhatsApp group of Cuban comedians and later confirmed by the Centro Promotor del Humor (CPH), which expressed its condolences to his family and friends, lamenting the loss of Orlando Manrufo.
In their statement, the institution fondly remembered "Mariconchi" for his engaging interactions with audiences and the quick-witted responses that brought laughter during performances.
Comedian Jorge Díaz Valera was the first to announce the sad news on social media, stating, "With a heavy heart, I have just been informed of the passing of comedian Orlando Manrufo, better known as MARICONCHI. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace."
Tributes from colleagues and friends quickly followed. Marcos García expressed his sorrow, writing, "I have just received very sad news. Farewell, my dear Orlando Manrufo! Life without your humor will truly be a bit harder."
Famed Cuban comedian Luis Silva, known as Pánfilo, also paid tribute on Facebook, saying, "I just learned about the passing of the great and ever-charming comedian Orlando Manrufo (Mariconchi). A sad piece of news. My condolences to his family, especially to his eldest daughter Olivia (Indirita from 'Vivir del cuento'), with whom I worked for several years. The América Theater was home to 'La Esquina de Mariconchi' for many years. Rest in peace."
From Maritime Engineer to Iconic Comedian
Initially, Manrufo pursued a career in maritime transport engineering, studying in former East Germany and Russia, which he practiced for approximately 16 years. However, his true passion always lay in the arts.
In 1988, he joined the amateur theater group "Olga Alonso," debuting in the play Santa Camila de La Habana Vieja. It was here that "Mariconchi" was born during an improvisation where Manrufo donned a wig and parodied an elderly woman alongside actress Laura de la Uz. Osvaldo Doimeadiós, founder of CPH, advised him to develop the character into standalone monologues, separating it from the collective sketches.
This advice proved fruitful. With the monologue "Aventuras y desventuras de Mariconchi," Manrufo won the National Humor Festival Aquelarre Award in the mid-1990s, solidifying his status in Cuban comedy.
The Lasting Impact of Mariconchi
"Mariconchi" became known for her sharp tongue, critical nature, and contentious humor, offering satirical commentary on the everyday issues faced by Havana residents. She served as both a humorous and sobering reflection of life on the island.
For over 25 years, Manrufo led the comedic show "La Esquina de Mariconchi," initially hosted at the América Theater and later moved to the Yara Cinema in Havana's Vedado district.
Manrufo's influence extends to his family; his daughter Olivia Manrufo Hernández portrayed "Indirita" on the popular TV show Vivir del Cuento alongside Luis Silva, before emigrating to Peru in 2012.
Earlier this year, just months before his passing, the state-run newspaper Juventud Rebelde published an interview celebrating 30 years of "Mariconchi" in Cuban comedy, highlighting that Manrufo remained active and relevant until shortly before his death.
