Elon Musk took to irony to express his reaction to the Republican loss in the U.S. midterm elections, sharing two posts on his social media platform X that garnered millions of interactions in a short time.

Musk's first post came as the results were signaling a historic victory for the Democrats. "I guess my space lasers for election interference didn't work this time," the South African entrepreneur wrote on X, poking fun at conspiracy theories about alleged technological meddling in the elections.

In the same post, Musk mentioned that data centers in space "look pretty appealing now," a comment that can be interpreted in two ways: as a jest about relocating his businesses given the new political climate, and as an allusion to the stock market's decline related to artificial intelligence (AI) amid investor fears of tighter regulations under the newly Democrat-led Congress.

The Nasdaq 100 futures saw a drop of up to 2.2%, while shares of companies like CoreWeave and Core Scientific fell between 1.3% and 3.2%.

The "Technical Difficulties" Post

Hours later, Musk shared a second message: a picture of the classic "Indian Head Test Pattern," a TV adjustment screen used by American networks since the 1940s to indicate service interruptions, with the caption: "SORRY! WE'RE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES." The ironic reference suggested that the Republican "program" had suffered a transmission failure.

A $474 Million Gamble That Didn't Pay Off

Musk's sarcasm holds even more weight considering the magnitude of his political investment. According to a New York Times investigation, the billionaire contributed at least $474 million to the Republican electoral cycle of 2026, making him the largest political donor in U.S. history for a single election cycle.

Of that amount, about $212 million was directed specifically to Texas, where Musk backed Ken Paxton's Senate bid. However, Democrat James Talarico defeated Paxton with 55% of the vote, becoming the first Democrat elected as a senator from the state since 1988. This loss was a particularly symbolic blow for Musk, given that Texas is the home base for SpaceX.

The "Blue Wave" Shifting the Balance of Power

Tuesday's results marked a historic defeat for the Republican Party as Democrats regained control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. In the Senate, Democrats secured at least 54 seats compared to 46 for the Republicans, gaining ground in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, and Iowa. In the House, they secured at least 231 seats, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority.

The new Congress's composition has direct implications for Musk: Democratic legislators had announced investigations concerning the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the federal contracts of his companies, and his role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Musk led the DOGE for approximately 130 days until May 2025, with its mission officially concluding on July 4, 2026.

Among the responses to Musk's data centers tweet, one user commented: "Hire lawyers, Mr. minus 477 million." Another was more blunt: "Can you stay out of politics already? Stick to building interesting things."
