Seasoned Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz secured a resounding victory in Florida's 20th District general election on Tuesday, defeating Republican Brent Andersen and independent Kedner Maxime. This win marks her twelfth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to projections from Telemundo 51, with approximately 78.8% of the votes tallied, Wasserman Schultz garnered 151,072 votes, making up 76.3% of the total. In comparison, Andersen received 39,235 votes (19.8%), and Maxime secured 7,689 votes (3.9%). The Associated Press called her victory at 7:09 PM Eastern Time.

Impacts of Florida's Redistricting

The election occurred against the backdrop of a district redrawing approved by the Florida Legislature and signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in early May 2026. This redistricting aimed to bolster Republican advantages within the state.

The new map dissolved the old District 25, where Wasserman Schultz previously served, transforming it into a more Republican-leaning area. In response, she announced her candidacy for District 20, which includes central Broward County, as well as parts of Fort Lauderdale, Tamarac, Coral Springs, and Deerfield Beach, with a predominantly African American populace.

Wasserman Schultz's Commitment to Her Constituents

On social media platform X, Wasserman Schultz expressed gratitude to her campaign team, saying, "Tonight, our victorious campaign stands on the shoulders of hardworking families, devoted congregations, unwavering unions, courageous LGBTQ+ advocates, and the proud Black, Caribbean, and Hispanic families that make up our wonderful South Florida community. I am incredibly proud to have earned their overwhelming trust to fight for every one of their families."

She emphasized her commitment to addressing critical issues: "Throughout this journey, Broward County residents told me they want a fighter in Washington who works tirelessly to lower the costs of gas, groceries, housing, healthcare, and utilities for every family, while protecting our democracy and bringing meaningful resources back to our community."

Challenges and Future Plans

Wasserman Schultz acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating her constituents "also want someone who will stand up to the costly, corrupt, and cruel MAGA agenda. That's precisely what I've done in Congress, and these election results show that Broward voters trust me unequivocally to continue that fight."

She expressed her honor in continuing to represent the community and work alongside future Speaker Hakeem Jeffries and a remarkable group of Democrats to make life in Broward County and across the United States safer and more affordable for everyone.

Her candidacy in the district stirred tensions with African American leaders, who had historically held the seat and requested she not run. Her Republican opponent, Brent Andersen, founder of Pilgrim Bay Insurance Agency in Pompano Beach, focused his campaign on insurance cost reduction, fiscal responsibility, and border control.

Having first been elected to the federal Congress in 2004, Wasserman Schultz is the longest-serving Democrat in South Florida and currently co-chairs the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.

In her victory speech, she reiterated her dedication to working for the interests of hardworking families, unions, LGBTQ+ communities, and Black, Caribbean, and Hispanic families in South Florida, aiming to reduce costs for essential goods and services.

She highlighted, "The election results demonstrate that Broward voters fully trust me to continue this fight," and pledged to collaborate with "future Speaker Hakeem Jeffries" to make life in Broward County and the nation "safer and more affordable for all."

Wasserman Schultz's victory comes at a pivotal time as Democrats aim to reclaim the majority in the House of Representatives, needing a net gain of three seats to achieve the required 218 votes, potentially positioning Jeffries as the first Black Speaker of the House.
