Federal investigators have uncovered a critical piece of the private jet that crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, killing all nine onboard. The discovery, found over six kilometers from the crash site, confirms that the aircraft began shedding components before hitting the ground.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Tom Chapman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that a significant portion of the Learjet 60's left elevator was recovered in three fragments, found between 2 and 6.1 kilometers from where the plane went down in Greenacres, near West Palm Beach.

The elevator, a movable surface at the tail of the airplane, is essential for controlling the plane's pitch. Losing this component can prevent pilots from pulling out of a steep descent.

Chapman noted that without this intact part, the crew would have been unable to stop the nosedive. However, he cautioned that due to the high speed the jet had reached, it's uncertain if the mechanism would have functioned even if it had remained attached.

“We still don’t know exactly what this means regarding what caused the loss of control, nor if the separation of this piece resulted from the forces acting on the aircraft,” the investigator stated.

The discovery is considered a “very important” piece of evidence by Chapman, as it will help guide further investigations into factors that may have led to the loss of control.

Aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti, consulted by AP, speculated that the fragments likely became detached due to the violent descent, rather than being the initial cause of the crash.

Guzzetti explained that if the parts had separated while the plane was at a higher altitude, they would have been discovered much farther away. Their relatively close proximity to the crash site suggests they came off when the aircraft had already descended significantly.

This finding supports an earlier hypothesis by the NTSB, which indicated the plane began to break apart before crashing. Chapman had previously suggested that investigators might find components far from the crash location.

The Learjet 60 had taken off from Austin, Texas, heading for the Bahamas when it lost control and crashed around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in Greenacres.

The impact created a massive crater in the pavement, leading to an explosion and fire. All nine occupants on board perished.

According to the latest information from AP, approximately 600 local residents remain displaced, and one person on the ground was injured.

The victims included tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young daughters, and their Colombian nanny Ana María Ramírez Cetina. The flight crew, including Captain Jeff Gregory, 55, also died.

As identities of the deceased were released, family and friends began sharing details of their lives.

Weather conditions are a major focus of the investigation. Copilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras radioed reports of ice accumulation and severe turbulence shortly before the tragedy.

According to AP, the copilot’s stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, told the New York Post that she sent a message to her partner about ten minutes before the crash, mentioning turbulence and ice formation.

The crew's final communications with air traffic controllers highlighted the rapid escalation of the emergency. Filgueiras warned they were about to hit the ground as the plane descended at more than 20,000 feet per minute, approximately 6,100 meters per minute.

“We’re running out of time!” the copilot exclaimed before the communication was lost.
