On Sunday, a Cuban named Bryan Hernández announced a reward of one million pesos for any information leading to the recovery of his gray Lada 1600, reportedly stolen in the early hours from the parking area of Terminal 2 at José Martí International Airport in Havana.

Hernández shared his plea on the Facebook group “Piezas de Lada en la Habana,” providing a contact number for tips: 52701157. He stated, “I am offering 1 million pesos for information on the whereabouts or exact location of this gray Lada 1600, stolen during the early morning hours of October 31 from the Terminal 2 parking lot. Please, it's extremely urgent.”

He posted two photos of the vehicle, which sparked some confusion among commenters: one was an older image showing a light blue Lada, while the other depicted a gray car parked outside. Hernández clarified that the sought-after car is gray and that the blue photo is an outdated image of the license plate.

In response to skeptics questioning the validity of his claim due to Terminal 2's closure, Hernández explained, “Terminal 2 is closed, but there’s a MIPYME parked there where I work. Please get informed before making such absurd comments.”

Public Debate on Security and Law Enforcement

The post sparked a public discussion about security measures. Many users questioned the role of surveillance cameras and security personnel, with comments like, “Shouldn't there be parking attendants and security cameras at the airport?” Another user was more pointed: “A car gets stolen from the airport, and what is the police doing?”

Back in September 2026, the U.S. Embassy warned of a surge in vehicle thefts and component thefts in Cuba's capital, blaming the country's economic conditions for the deterioration.

Social Media: The New Tool for Crime Resolution

Turning to social media and offering rewards to retrieve stolen cars has become common in Cuba, reflecting public perception of the police's limited effectiveness. Similar incidents involving stolen Ladas in Havana have been reported in recent years, with rewards ranging from 300,000 CUP to several thousand dollars.

In Cuba's informal market, a working Lada with proper documentation can fetch between 800,000 and 1,500,000 pesos, meaning Hernández's offered reward is roughly equivalent to, or even less than, the car's value.

As of the time of this publication, there is no official confirmation of the theft, no suspects have been identified, and the vehicle remains missing.
