An intense explosion followed by a towering plume of black smoke disrupted the community of Greenacres in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday. The incident occurred near the intersection of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, prompting a swift response from local firefighting and rescue teams.
According to local outlet BocaNewsNow, emergency responders arrived at the scene around 1:10 p.m., with area hospitals placed on precautionary alert for a potential mass casualty event. This is a standard emergency protocol when the scope of an incident is unclear and does not necessarily confirm any fatalities or numerous injuries.
The exact cause of the explosion remains officially unverified. Social media is awash with images and videos depicting flames, scattered debris, and a large crater in the road, but none conclusively show wreckage from an aircraft, fueling public speculation.
While some speculate about a gas explosion, others suggest a missile or a small plane crash; however, none of these theories have been corroborated by authorities.
BocaNewsNow, in a 1:39 p.m. update, cited sources claiming a small aircraft had collided with a mobile home. Despite this, the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Department has neither issued an official statement nor responded to inquiries from the media, a move BocaNewsNow described as puzzling.
Confusion was evident from the outset: at 1:18 p.m., county officials were still informing hospitals that the incident "might" be an air crash, without confirmation. By 1:27 p.m., at least one hospital received confirmation, although firefighters had yet to make any public statements.
A witness, identified only as Lou, commented on BocaNewsNow, "I heard the sound of a plane. Seconds later, the impact. A cloud of black smoke. It didn’t last long."
What is confirmed, as of the latest updates, is that no individuals have been transported to area hospitals. It remains unclear whether there were occupants in the mobile home at the time of impact or how many people, if any, were aboard an involved aircraft.
Local channel WPTV also reported on the fire and possible explosion at the same location, yet no cause or casualties have been confirmed. Authorities have yet to provide an official account of the incident and are expected to release further details shortly.
