Images revealing the dilapidated state of the once-iconic Hotel Europa in San Germán, located in Holguín province, have sparked outrage on social media. Locals are blaming the government for the hotel's confiscation and subsequent neglect, leading to its current ruinous condition.

On Thursday, Ramiro Gómez, the admin of the Facebook group "Club de San Germán, Holguín," shared photographs taken on September 24. These pictures reveal peeling paint, debris-covered floors, moss, garbage, exposed ceiling beams, and a severely deteriorated colonial-style arch.

According to residents and former locals, the hotel has been in this state for over 15 years. Many participants in the online discussion reminisced about the establishment's memorable features, such as the stained glass windows, round upholstered seats, the drink shelf, and dining tables.

Memories and Legacy of Hotel Europa

One comment highlighted that Francisco Martín, known as "Pancho," originally built the property. His daughter, Maritza Martín Coronel, still lives next to the crumbling structure, witnessing the decay of her father's hard work.

"It is heartbreaking to see what her father built with dedication now destroyed... Those who took over and, as expected, with nothing invested, merely exploited without care or maintenance," a participant lamented.

Calls for Private Investment

Other users noted that the building is "on the verge of collapse" and warned that without private investment, it may entirely vanish in the coming years. They also remembered another establishment, the New York, which once stood beside the Europa but has since disappeared completely.

The group's administrator expressed broader discontent, emphasizing that "destruction and neglect spread throughout Cuba, from Cape San Antonio to Maisí Point."

Historical and Cultural Loss

The deterioration of such spaces contributes to the erosion of San Germán's historical landmarks. After the 1959 revolution, the locality's original name was changed to Urbano Noris, a revision many residents oppose.

Urbano Noris sugar mill, once among the largest in the nation, now lies in ruins due to years of mismanagement and the widespread closure of mills initiated by dictator Fidel Castro (1926-2016) in 2022.

Similar neglect is visible in other areas of Holguín, such as the Vocational School José Martí, the Holguín-Gibara railway station, and El Mambisito Park.

Ongoing Struggles in San Germán

San Germán faces additional challenges reflecting the decline of its services and infrastructure. In February, a fire destroyed three homes, and in August, the water supply was halted after thieves stole dielectric oil from a transformer.
