The First Criminal Chamber of the Provincial People's Court in Santiago de Cuba has handed down a life sentence to Guillermo Sánchez Gutiérrez. He was found guilty of murdering a member of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) auxiliary in the Palma Soriano municipality, as reported by the state-run newspaper, Sierra Maestra, this past Saturday.

The incident leading to this severe sentence took place on July 19, 2025. The accused attacked the head of the local PNR sub-sector with a knife while the officer was off-duty and in plain clothes.

After the initial attack, the victim sought refuge in a neighbor's house. However, Sánchez Gutiérrez pursued him, broke down the door, and inflicted seven additional wounds to the victim's abdomen, back, and legs, resulting in his death.

The court described the trial as a "public and exemplary oral hearing" and applied an aggravating factor under Article 80 of the Cuban Penal Code, which pertains to acts committed out of vengeance or reprisal. This consideration was pivotal in issuing the maximum penalty of life imprisonment rather than a 20 to 30-year sentence.

"Sánchez Gutiérrez found the victim at a neighbor's house and unexpectedly attacked him, causing a deep leg wound, declaring it would be the last time he would be summoned," Sierra Maestra reported. Despite his injury, the PNR auxiliary managed to run approximately 60 meters to seek shelter in another neighbor's house, where the assailant followed him, broke down the door, and delivered seven more wounds.

The charges against Sánchez Gutiérrez included murder, under Article 344 of the Penal Code, along with home invasion and threats.

A similar case was initially reported in July 2025, involving a victim identified only as "Yoleysi," who was attacked while delivering a citation. The court's recent verdict confirms the events and the perpetrator's identity.

In Cuba, life imprisonment means permanent incarceration in a high or maximum-security facility, as stipulated by Law 151/2022. Individuals serving a life sentence are not eligible for parole but may change their penitentiary regime after five and ten years of good behavior, though this does not imply release.

This is not an isolated incident in the province. In February 2026, the same Provincial People's Court in Santiago de Cuba sentenced three men to life imprisonment for killing a motorcyclist to steal and sell parts of his motorcycle, also under Article 344 of the Penal Code. This indicates a pattern of imposing the maximum penalty in aggravated murder cases within the province.
