Elderly Cuban Astounds Content Creator with Push-Up Challenge

Friday, October 30, 2026 by Samantha Mendoza

In a remarkable encounter in San Cristóbal, Artemisa, an elderly man riding his bicycle became the unexpected star of a video by content creator Yeison López. López challenged him to earn 500 Cuban pesos for every push-up he completed.

The challenge kicked off when López, riding by on his motorcycle, asked the man, "Do you think you're in good physical shape? I'll pay you 500 pesos for each push-up you do."

Despite appearing tired from pedaling his bike and with a cigar in his mouth, the man accepted the challenge, admitting, "Oh, I'm exhausted."

Even though López offered him some time to rest, the man dismounted his bicycle and began doing push-ups one after another, never letting go of the cigar.

After completing six repetitions, López summed up the impressive feat: "3,000 pesos earned easily, and he never let go of the cigar."

The emotional weight of the video increased when the man revealed he was scheduled for eye surgery that weekend. "I have an operation on my eye this weekend, on Friday," he shared while ensuring López that everything was prepared for the procedure.

Comments on the video reflected a mix of admiration, humor, and emotion. "Cubans never cease to amaze me. They might be down in some conditions, but always hold their heads high," one user commented. Another described the scene succinctly: "This man is pure magical realism!"

The cigar detail sparked its own debate. Some urged López to advise the man to quit smoking, especially before surgery, while others defended the man. "He's 60 years old, probably has been smoking for over 40 years. He has his habits, his story, his culture. Support the old man," one follower responded. Another comment was emphatic: "Better dead than without the cigar. Truly Cuban."

The video is part of López's work on his account @hermandadtmph, where he documents the lives of Cuban workers and families facing hardship in the province of Artemisa. Among his popular uploads is the story of Dainer, a 12-year-old from Bahía Honda who climbs palm trees and walks barefoot to school, with over 450,000 views.

He also shared the tale of Miguel, a boy selling candies, walking two kilometers to reach a beach, and the story of a worker in San Cristóbal whose followers gifted him a motorcycle to aid his daily life.
