The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the United States has mandated the recall of around 11,000 HAIARA W5 PRO external battery packs due to the risk of their lithium batteries exploding or catching fire, posing severe burn hazards, injury, or even fatality.

According to the official notice released on Thursday, the affected product is black, marked with "20W" on the front and "Model: W5 PRO" on the side.

This specific battery model was exclusively available on Amazon, sold by Mitrytech—the trade name for the Chinese company Huizhou Yancheng Trading Co., Ltd.—between May 2025 and September 2026, priced between $18 and $22.

Identifying If Your Battery Is Part of the Recall

Not every HAIARA W5 PRO unit is impacted. The recall pertains solely to those without a date code in the YYYYMMDD format printed on the side.

If you spot this eight-digit code on the side of your device, it is not included in the recall.

The seller's name (Mitrytech) and the brand (HAIARA) might not always be visible on the physical device, but they should be on the Amazon purchase receipt.

Steps to Take If You Have a Recalled Unit

The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the device and reach out to Mitrytech to arrange a full refund.

To get the refund, consumers need to write "recalled" on the battery with a permanent marker, photograph it, and send the image to HAIARArecall@outlook.com, also confirming that the device was disposed of according to applicable regulations. Additional information can be found on www.haiara.net/recalls.html.

Regarding disposal, U.S. authorities emphasize that lithium batteries should not be discarded in household trash or municipal recycling bins as they can ignite during collection or at waste facilities.

The proper method is to take them to an electronics recycling center or a local household hazardous waste management program.

If the battery is swollen, hot, smoking, or damaged, it should not be charged, punctured, or disassembled. If it catches fire, evacuate the area and call 911.

The Extent of the Issue

Mitrytech has received 600 reports of fires and other thermal incidents related to the product, including three burn injuries and nine reports of property damage.

This recall is part of a series of similar alerts issued by the CPSC over the past two years targeting power banks sold on Amazon, such as the NEWDERY ZHX-PB22, INIU BI-B41, VEEKTOMX VT103, and Hererod PW40/EW40 models, all due to the same failure mechanism: lithium-ion batteries that can overheat and combust.

In Cuba, the fire hazard posed by lithium batteries is also a well-documented issue, exacerbated by frequent power outages and sudden electricity reconnections.

Data released in August 2026 highlights that improper battery use has resulted in numerous fatalities on the island over recent years, with thousands of incidents mainly related to electric scooters.

Understanding the Recall of HAIARA Batteries

How can I tell if my HAIARA W5 PRO is affected by the recall?

To determine if your battery is part of the recall, check for a date code in the YYYYMMDD format on the side of the device. If present, your unit is not recalled.

What should I do if my battery is recalled?

Stop using the battery immediately and contact Mitrytech for a refund. Write "recalled" on the battery, photograph it, and email the image to HAIARArecall@outlook.com, confirming proper disposal.

Why are lithium batteries a fire hazard?

Lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire due to structural failures, manufacturing defects, or improper handling, making them a significant safety risk.
