Starting anew in a foreign land involves exploring fresh opportunities and adjusting to a different lifestyle. However, it also brings about emotions that are sometimes difficult to articulate. This is the experience shared by Sabrina Campuzano, a Cuban woman who has been living in Italy for a year and five months. Her journey has been filled with happiness, nostalgia, and sadness, especially when she thinks of her family back in Cuba.
In a video shared on TikTok, Sabrina recounted her experiences since arriving in Europe with her husband. She initially lived in Artena, a town in the province of Rome, and is now settled in Ravenna.
One of the most striking moments for her was something as ordinary as walking into a supermarket and seeing fully stocked shelves. This sight stirred mixed emotions in her, reflecting on the struggles her loved ones continue to face in Cuba.
“Walking into supermarkets and seeing so many products was overwhelming because when I left Cuba, basic necessities like electricity and water were already scarce,” she recalled.
“Having access to so much here while my family is still there dealing with shortages made me feel a complex mix of emotions,” Sabrina confessed, illustrating the contradiction of enjoying a more comfortable life while her family copes with shortages in Cuba.
Challenges Beyond Nostalgia
The transition was not defined solely by nostalgia. The Italian climate posed another challenge, as Sabrina was used to the sunny, warm weather of her homeland.
She explained that the cold, gray days of the Italian winter affected her emotionally. “There were days when I didn’t even feel like getting out of bed,” she admitted.
During these tough times, her husband provided unwavering support. Sabrina emphasized that he was by her side at all times, encouraging her and assisting with even the simplest tasks when she was feeling low.
“He has been my biggest support here, the person who stands by me from morning till night, giving me strength, cheering me on, and sticking with me even on my hardest days,” she expressed. She also mentioned that when she lacked the energy to cook, her husband took over that responsibility.
Creating a New Life
Gradually, Sabrina is building a new life. She has worked, learned Italian, and visited various places like Rome, Turin, Naples, Puglia, Calabria, and Tuscany. Now residing in Ravenna, she continues to adjust to this new chapter.
Her story echoes those of other Cuban women who have shared their experiences of starting over in Italy. Some, even after years away from the island, admit that the longing for Cuba never truly fades.
After spending a year and five months in Italy, Sabrina has learned to live with these emotions and appreciates the opportunities she has, all while deeply missing those she left behind in Cuba.
“Today, after a year and five months here in Italy, I have learned that I can be grateful for the life I am building and still miss my family dearly,” she reflected.
She concluded her account with a poignant statement that encapsulates her journey: “Behind every beginning, there is a story that is not always visible.”
